I write firstly to thank the 47 Club Members who have very generously donated a total of £14,000 (including Gift Aid element) to the Charitable Trust. This is a wonderful response for which the School and the Club are deeply grateful. It has obviously been impossible for me to write individually to each generous donor so please accept this letter as a token of our warm appreciation. A list of those generous donors is given elsewhere in this Newsletter [see From the Secretary, below]. As I explained in my September letter to every Club member, the Charity Commission require us to achieve a capital sum of at least £20,000 before the first awards are made to deserving students. We therefore still need to raise another £6,000 as quickly as possible. If every member who has not yet made a donation gave at least £10 each, we would be home and dry. I do assure you that every donation, big or small, is most welcome and that every penny of it will be used to help deserving students. May I remind Members that the Trust is designed to help disadvantaged students who have fewer opportunities within the School or even more importantly are unable to attend the University or College that their abilities merit. Before an award is made by the Trustees, a student will need to demonstrate that he or she has already made very significant efforts to achieve their educational objective. We (The Trustees) very much wish to make the first awards to deserving students this summer. So do please give as generously and quickly as possible using the Donation form at the foot of this letter* If you do pay Tax (and are therefore able to augment your donation by 28% by Gift Aid) or wish to pay monthly by Banker's Order, the Treasurer will send to you the forms for you to complete and return to him. Our grateful thanks are again due to Hugh GRIFFITHS for so successfully arranging for our Annual London Dinner to take place at University College Gower Street. Regrettably travel arrangements were disrupted because of rail difficulties and the Head Teacher Dr lain Melvin was a casualty of this. However those in attendance had as usual a thoroughly good time.  SCHOOL ARMISTICE SERVICE
  
  

The Annual Service and CCF Parade took place at the School Memorial Gates on Friday 10th November 2000. Again the weather was very kind and we were blessed with sunshine. More than a dozen Club members attended. As in previous years the whole School attended. The CCF Band were in good form and Last Post and Reveille were sounded. Students read out  the Roll of Honour in respect of the Great War and World War 2. The Oration was given by Tony MOORE, Deputy Head. Wreaths were laid by Gordon CURRY on behalf of the Governing Body, for the Hardyeans' Club by Colin LUCAS, Mr. SENNETT for the RBL and two students on behalf of the School. The Parade was, for the first time under the command of the new CO of the CCF, Flt. Lt. STOSIEK. Afterwards the School provided refreshments for the Guests and the opportunity was taken to present the now-famed Hardye/DGS tapestry and the former President's Jewel to the School. If anyone knows the history of the tapestry the Secretary would like to know. It is believed to have been made in the 1950s

 WOMEN'S RUGBY
    
  

The Secretary thought that members might be interested in the following contribution concerning Dorchester Girls, Emma and Jane MITCHELL, both ex-Castlefield and Loughborough University (sent in by Mrs S M Mitchell)

After an absence of nearly a year Dorchester born Emma Mitchell returns to the international rugby field. A ruptured anterior cruciate ligament meant a complete restructuring of her right knee followed by an intensive rehabilitation programme.

The occasion was a hugely momentous and unique family event, when on the 18th November, she lined up as England's scrum half in the Bermuda Classic Tournament against her identical twin sister Jane, playing as inside centre for the United States of America.

The exciting game proved to be evenly matched and resulted in a 10 all draw, with Jane scoring one of the tries for America.

Both girls were educated at Castlefield School, Dorchester before graduating from Loughborough University. Emma has over 50 international caps to her credit and Jane won 21 before deciding to settle in America seven years ago, where she has since won 7 caps playing Rugby Sevens for the USA.  [Well Done Both! - Editor]

On behalf of the Club we extend sincere condolences to the family and friends of the following

Ian M STURGESS (1948-56) died aged 62 in April 2000.

Information from David DOWNTON who writes:- Ian STURGESS , "Sam" as most people knew him died at the age of 62 last April. Providentially I had spent a week with him at Cambridge a few months before, where we relived our youth and generally had a great time. He was not apparently ill then but went down with lung cancer shortly afterwards. Even sadder as he was a non-smoker and kept pretty fit. [David enclosed a CV of Ian STURGESS' career provided by his widow Rosemary... They had three children, 33, 31 and 31 and he died shortly after attending the wedding of his last unmarried daughter, before she had returned from honeymoon.]

Here are some brief details from the CV:

Ian was an agricultural economist with over 35 years experience in research management, research, teaching, consulting for government and business and editing. Latterly freelance consultant, mainly working in CEEC. Particular expertise, with respect to agriculture, in government policy, international trade, markets and marketing, and measurement of costs and returns.

After Hardye's he served two years in the Royal Marines, at sea and in Northern Ireland, before going to Oxford, where he gained an MA in Philosophy, Politics and Economics, in 1961. Then to Cornell University where he gained a MS in Agricultural Economics in 1963.

He worked for Unilever in London 1963-66 as head of a team concerned with forecasting prices of agricultural raw materials and demand for compound feeds as well as the effects of government agricultural policies.

Then to Australia 1966-70, where he became Senior Lecturer at the Department of Agricultural Economics at the University of New England. He returned to this country in 1971 and was at the University of Newcastle upon Tyne until 1977, firstly as Principal Research Associate in the Agricultural Adjustment Unit researching the impact on the cereals market of the UK's entry into the EEC and then Senior Lecturer in the Department of Agricultural Economics, researching the cereals markets, especially malting barley, and futures trading. Taught economic theory, marketing economics and economics of the agricultural industry.

Between 1977 and 1998 Ian was Director of Agricultural Economics Unit, Department of Land Economy, at Cambridge University. During this period he made several consulting visits overseas and found time to act as consultant to several private companies, county councils and other public authorities in this country. Involved with television, radio and press presentations on agricultural policy and marketing. Gave specialist advice to UK parliamentary committees particularly the House of Lords Committee on Food and Agriculture of the European Community. He was the author or co-author of several publications and conference papers on subjects such as the Common Agricultural Policy, two of which were awaiting publication at the time of his death.

 THE HEADTEACHER WRITES
  
  

Readers will recall my lament concerning the weather in the last newsletter - those who live in the area will be aware that matters have improved little and the school continues to reel from wind and rain of almost King Lear proportions.

The present inclement weather did not reduce the school's elation at learning that eleven of our students have gained places at Oxbridge for September 2001.

After last year's seven this is another truly exceptional performance which I doubt can be equaled by any other comprehensive school in the UK. Indeed many selective and independent schools would envy this achievement. Eight students will be studying at Oxford, three at Cambridge. At the same time other students are gaining entry to similarly prestigious universities such as Warwick, Durham, LSE and numerous others.

With such a large and successful sixth form it is right and fitting the students are able to achieve offers from these universities but that does not in any way detract from the achievement.

The school continues to expand; popularity and success is something of a mixed blessing when one cannot accommodate the number of students who wish to join us, but this is certainly a more comfortable position to be in than those schools who suffer from low numbers and problems with finance. Increased numbers means the school has a further basic need for accommodation and I am pleased to report that the DofE has provided another £1.35m for further extensions to Art, Technology and Science, seven seminar rooms for sixth form study and a doubling in size of our Information and Communication Technology facilities. Thomas Hardye is very fortunate in having excellent facilities and when these further developments are linked to the extension of the sixth form common room (completion date February 2001) one can only be optimistic about the future of the school and the facilities we can provide for students.

I am also very optimistic about the The Hardyeans Charitable Trust and would like to thank all those past members of the school who have seen fit to contribute; I guarantee that future funds will be put to very good use. Finally, may I belatedly wish all members of the Club a happy and prosperous new year.
